Chapter 3 so far...
Winston dreams of his mother and sister sinking below him, recalling their beauty and faint memories of his father, likely lost in the early purges. He reflects on how personal tragedies like theirs no longer happen; in the harsh world he lives in, emotions like love and grief have been replaced by fear and empty obedience. The dream leaves him with a lingering sense of loss the Party cannot fully erase.
Chapter 2
Winston panics after leaving his diary open with anti-Big Brother sentiments. He helps his neighbor, Mrs. Parsons, with a blocked sink in her disheveled flat, reflecting on the poor state of their building and her husband's loyalty to the Party. Chaos ensues when her indoctrinated children arrive, threatening him with toy weapons and expressing disappointment over missing a public hanging.
On a cold April day, Winston Smith enters Victory Mansions, avoiding a dust swirl. The building smells of cabbage; posters of Big Brother adorn the walls. The lift is broken, so he climbs to his flat, passing the omnipresent posters. Inside, a telescreen spouts figures about pig-iron production. Winston, a frail Party member, observes the bleakness outside and the dominance of Party posters.
